Nigeria has had a chequered narrative in its implementation of this grand strategy that has often been hailed as a comprehensive and integrated approach to national sustainable development. Consisting of seventeen (17) global goals and 163 targets expected to be achieved by 2030 in every country of the world.
Nigeria has been actively working towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) since their adoption in 2015. It has the dedicated office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President (OSSAP-SDG) providing coordination and Policy advise. The country has demonstrated its commitment through leadership and ownership of the implementation process, with the United Nations providing technical support to the OSSAP-SDG and line Ministries.
The implementation of the SDG cuts across the 36 States and the FCT. While Government push for the attainment of the SDGs is commendable, the status of implementation can best be described as average. It currently ranks in 146 out of 166 on the Sustainable Development Report with a score of 54.58 as shown on their website*. The Sustainable Development Report (formerly the SDG Index & Dashboards) is a global assessment of countries' progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. It is a complement to the official SDG indicators and the voluntary national reviews.
