This powerful Book of Stories documents the life-changing impact of the Youths Can Lead project in Delta State, implemented by Centre LSD and supported by the Ford Foundation. Focused on building a new generation of strategic leaders across Nigeria’s Niger Delta region, the project trained 90 young people (50 males and 10 females featured in the book) between 2017 and 2019, nurturing their political, economic, and civic capacities.
Through vivid personal narratives, the publication highlights how formerly disengaged and disillusioned youths transformed into community organizers, elected leaders, political appointees, and successful entrepreneurs. Nineteen trainees won elections, while twenty-five received political appointments. Many launched businesses to support future political ambitions, breaking free from dependency and embracing leadership as service.
From establishing youth advocacy platforms to contesting state assembly seats and launching inclusive education initiatives, these stories embody a deep, organic shift in orientation, ideology, and identity. The publication captures a rising youth movement—bold, strategic, and anchored in values of accountability, equity, and civic purpose.
Raising Strategic and New Generational Leaders in Delta State is more than a report; it is a testament to the transformative power of leadership development. It is essential reading for policymakers, development actors, and institutions committed to youth inclusion, democratic renewal, and sustainable development in Nigeria.
