2019 Election Toolkit for Religious Leaders Volume 3

Research Reports By Centre LSD Mar 06, 2019

This practical guide was developed by the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy & Development (Centre LSD) to support religious leaders in engaging constructively during Nigeria’s 2019 general elections, held on February 23 and March 9, 2019. Recognizing the profound influence of faith leaders in Nigerian society, the toolkit is designed to equip them with the knowledge, strategies, and ethical frameworks needed to promote peaceful, informed, and active citizen participation in the electoral process.

The toolkit emphasizes the unique role of religious institutions in fostering democratic values, civic responsibility, and national cohesion. It outlines key areas where religious leaders can exert positive influence: voter education, non-partisan advocacy, peacebuilding, and monitoring electoral violence or misconduct. The publication provides faith-based messages and scriptural references that leaders can use in sermons and teachings to inspire integrity, justice, and peaceful coexistence during the electoral period.

Grounded in Centre LSD’s mission of building strategic leadership for sustainable development, the toolkit also explores Nigeria’s broader political context, including historical challenges of electoral violence, voter apathy, and manipulation. It encourages religious leaders to see themselves as change agents who can guide their congregations towards active and ethical civic engagement.

By empowering faith leaders with this resource, Centre LSD affirms its commitment to inclusive governance and citizen-driven development. The publication not only served a timely purpose during the 2019 elections but remains a valuable reference for ongoing civic education and interfaith collaboration for peace and democratic consolidation in Nigeria.
