WIFE Project Field Story | Abakaliki, Ebonyi State
In this episode of our WIFE Project Impact Stories, we spotlight the work of Mrs. Chinaso Chinedu, Coordinator of the Abakaliki Centre LSD Multipurpose Cooperative Society for Quarry Women in Ebonyi State.
Before the WIFE intervention, the cooperative existed but was inactive. Through the Livelihood Support Training for Women in Frontline Extractive Communities (WIFE), members gained the knowledge and structure needed to transform it into a functional economic platform.
Key Impact:
• 20-member cooperative formally structured
• Women opened bank accounts and obtained identification for the first time
• Advocacy engagement with the Ebonyi State Commissioner for Solid Minerals
• Launch of a skill acquisition programme for quarry women
• Business expansion and diversified income streams
For women whose income depends on unstable quarry operations, the cooperative now provides a safer, more dignified, and sustainable economic alternative.
The WIFE Project demonstrates how cooperative strengthening, financial inclusion, and institutional engagement can drive measurable economic empowerment in frontline extractive communities.
