Joy Ogboghene, an Intersectional Leadership Initiative (ILI) Fellow from Bayelsa State, is turning knowledge into action to support persons with albinism in her community.
Through the ILI programme implemented by the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development (Centre LSD), Joy strengthened her advocacy skills and began promoting practical solutions that protect the health and wellbeing of persons with albinism.
During a recent visit to her community, Joy shared how the provision of sunscreen and UV umbrellas has helped people better understand the importance of sun protection. While some community members were previously aware of these preventive measures, seeing their real impact has motivated many to begin taking skin protection more seriously.
Joy also highlights critical areas that need further attention, including:
- Regular skin cancer examinations
- Periodic skin checks for prevention
- Access to medicated photochromic glasses, which help protect the eyes and improve vision in bright sunlight.
Her story is a powerful reminder that moving from theory to practical action can transform lives and strengthen community awareness.
Through fellows like Joy, the Inclusive Leadership Initiative continues to support leaders who are committed to advancing inclusion, health awareness, and dignity for persons with disabilities and marginalized groups.
