Six years after the abolition of the “Money Woman” practice in Becheve Community, Cross River State, some women are still waiting to be free.
This documentary tells their story.
In 2020, a historic declaration by traditional leaders brought an end to a long-standing practice where young girls were pledged into marriage as a form of debt settlement. But for those who had already been affected before the abolition, the journey to freedom did not end there.
Through powerful first-hand accounts, this film captures the lived experiences of these women - their fears, their resilience, and their hopes for a different future.
It also documents a critical new phase of engagement led by Centre LSD, working with traditional leaders, families, and the community to secure the release of women who wish to leave these arrangements. In a landmark decision, a pathway was agreed to support their freedom and reintegration.
But this is not a single story.
While many women are choosing to leave, others are navigating complex personal realities, reminding us that true freedom is not only about leaving but about having the power to choose.
