Developed under the Male Engagement Program for GBV/SRHR/HP Reduction and supported by the EU-UN Spotlight Initiative, the manual takes a participatory and reflective approach to shifting harmful gender norms and fostering gender justice.
Grounded in Kurt Lewin’s three-stage model of change—Unfreeze, Change, and Refreeze—the manual systematically guides participants through unlearning entrenched patriarchal beliefs and embracing new, equitable identities. Through five robust modules, it covers core concepts of gender and masculinity, root causes of violence, practical advocacy skills, and collective community action strategies.
Each session includes real-life case studies, experiential exercises, role plays, and community mapping activities. Topics range from understanding the impact of gender norms and power dynamics to building collectives and engaging key influencers such as religious and traditional leaders. The manual also introduces national policies like the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act and teaches participants how to link survivors to care and justice systems.
By integrating human rights, public health, and social development perspectives, this manual equips facilitators and participants with the tools to become change agents, dismantle toxic masculinities, and foster safer, more inclusive communities. It is essential for civil society trainers, youth leaders, educators, and policymakers committed to ending gender-based violence in Nigeria.
