As part of a wider intervention across three Nigerian states, the study focuses on how policy implementation failures, weak regulatory oversight, and low civic engagement have undermined the potential of the state's mineral-rich economy.
Ekiti State is endowed with minerals such as clay, quartz, granite, kaolin, feldspar, and tantalite, yet its mining sector suffers from neglect, informal exploitation, and environmental degradation. The brief exposes how mining operations often occur without proper oversight, with many companies failing to meet statutory responsibilities such as signing Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with communities or adhering to environmental and safety standards.
The document proposes a set of 20 actionable principles under the banner of #DoMiningRight, targeting government, mining companies, civil society, and host communities. These include calls for transparency, enforcement of environmental regulations, citizen participation in mining decisions, and institutional reforms that support value addition and inclusive development.
This publication serves as an advocacy tool and a policy roadmap for making mineral extraction more sustainable, equitable, and beneficial to local communities. It is essential reading for stakeholders in governance, extractive industry reform, civil society, and environmental justice.
