Traditional institutions remain among the most influential drivers of social transformation in Nigeria.

As part of ongoing advocacy under the Male Feminists Network (MFN) Project, the Executive Director of Centre LSD, Mr. Monday Osasah, and the Founding Executive Director, Dr. Otive Igbuzor, paid an advocacy visit to the Paramount Ruler of Rumuevuorlu Community, Prof. Chris Akani, and his cabinet to discuss the critical role of traditional leaders in preventing gender-based violence.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Otive Igbuzor emphasized that traditional rulers are custodians of culture, guardians of community values, and powerful influencers of social norms. He noted that while culture is an essential part of society, practices that undermine human dignity, equality, and justice must be challenged.

Drawing from examples of harmful cultural beliefs that have persisted in some communities, he stressed that traditions found to be repugnant to natural justice should be repudiated, while positive cultural values that promote respect, dignity, and peaceful coexistence should be strengthened.

The engagement reaffirmed the important role traditional institutions can play in challenging harmful norms, promoting gender equality, and fostering safer communities for women and girls.

Together, traditional leaders, community members, and development actors can help build a society where culture protects dignity and where violence has no place.
