The African Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development (Centre LSD) shall Tuesday August 10 2020, commence the capacity building of key decision makers in informal institutions with special focus on traditional rulers, religious clerics, and youth leaders in Sankwala, Becheve, and Calabar, Cross River State, on the need to secure communities against violence against women and girls and harmful practices.
A statement signed by Mr. Vincent Dania, Senior Programme Officer of the Centre, said the objective of the training is to strengthen the capacity of traditional and religious leaders to advocate for the implementation of legislation and policies on Violence Against Women & Girls (VAWG), Harmful practices (HP) and promote gender-equitable norms, attitudes, and behaviours using their platforms.
Traditional rulers, religious leaders, and youth leaders have influence in communities around Nigeria and play key roles in advocating and driving mobilization initiatives that address social vices, violence, and maintenance of law and order. Engaging them, therefore, is pivotal in the achievement of SDG 5 (achieve gender equality and empower all women) in Nigeria.
The training, which is part of the activities in the implementation of the Male Engagement component of the Spotlight Initiative Project in Lagos and Cross River State by Centre LSD, shall equip participants with skills that will enable them to identify resources within their communities to tackle VAWG and HPs.
Spotlight Initiative is a European Union and United Nations global, multi-year initiative that spotlights and places emphasis and efforts to achieving gender equality and women’s empowerment in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (see https://www.spotlightinitiative.org/).
The statement urged members of the public to take more proactive actions to end all forms of violence against women and girls, beginning with their immediate communities.
