Regional Meeting on The Open Government Partnership (OGP) in Northwest Nigeria

News & Press Essien Nyong, Feb 03, 2025

The African Centre for Leadership, Strategy, and Development (Centre LSD) has commenced a regional meeting on the Open Government Partnership (OGP) in Northwest Nigeria. This event, held in Sokoto on February 3, 2025, is part of the Centre’s project, Promoting Transparency and Accountability in the Governance Process through the Implementation of Open Government Partnership in Nigeria.

Regional Meeting on The Open Government Partnership (OGP) in Northwest Nigeria

In a statement, by Centre LSD’s Programme Coordinator and OGP Project Lead, Mr. Lawal Amodu, emphasized that the regional meeting aims to foster experience-sharing among OGP-implementing states in Northwest Nigeria. The participating states—Jigawa, Kebbi, Kaduna, Kano, Sokoto, and Zamfara—will review progress, identify challenges, and explore strategies to enhance transparency and accountability in governance.

Amodu noted that since states joined the OGP at different times between 2017 and 2022, their implementation progress varies. The meeting will therefore provide a platform for state representatives to discuss achievements, address challenges, and reinforce their commitment to the OGP’s principles. As the MacArthur Foundation-supported project nearing completion, Amodu stressed the need for continued advocacy and collaboration among stakeholders. He highlighted the role of civil society organizations (CSOs) in sustaining the OGP’s impact and engaging international partners to support transparency and accountability efforts.

Mr. Amodu said that the event will equip key stakeholders, including State Steering Committee (SSC) members and Thematic Working Group (TWG) Co-Chairs, with essential reporting tools and knowledge to strengthen open-governance practices. A Monitoring and Evaluation expert from the OGP National Secretariat will provide training on the official monitoring tools and reporting templates.

All well-meaning citizens are urged to engage with the OGP initiative through Centre LSD social media platforms:
