Plateau Convenes Climate Policy Dialogue to Promote Inclusive and Gender-Responsive Action.

The African Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development (Centre LSD), in collaboration with the Side-By-Side Movement Nigeria – Plateau Chapter, and with funding support from Christian Aid Nigeria, will convene Key Climate Policy dialogue to promote Inclusive and Gender- Responsive Action from February 18–20, 2026, in Plateau State, Nigeria.

Plateau State sits at the intersection of climate vulnerability, economic fragility, and communal tensions, where climate-induced resource pressures have exacerbated insecurity and widened socio-economic inequalities. Effective climate governance must therefore bridge environmental sustainability with peacebuilding, gender justice, and inclusive development.

Ms. Offiong Enang, Women’s Rights Coordinator at Centre LSD, emphasized that the dialogue represents a strategic intervention aimed at ensuring climate budgeting is responsive to the needs of women and vulnerable populations, strengthening the Plateau State Climate Assembly as an effective platform for meaningful citizen engagement, positioning climate action as a driver of social cohesion and sustainable peace, and advancing implementation frameworks that deliver measurable and accountable outcomes beyond policy commitments.

Held under the theme “Building Bridges for People, Peace, and Our Planet,” the three-day multi-stakeholder engagement is designed to deepen public ownership of the Plateau State Climate Change Policy and strengthen pathways for inclusive, gender-responsive, and conflict-sensitive implementation.

The dialogue will bring together government representatives, civil society actors, interfaith and traditional leaders, women’s rights advocates, persons with disabilities (PWDs), youth leaders, media practitioners, and community stakeholders to translate climate policy commitments into practical, community-driven action. Discussions will examine Plateau State’s climate risks and vulnerabilities, clarify the mandate of the Plateau State Climate Assembly (PSCA), and simplify policy provisions into accessible and inclusive action points.

According to Ms. Enang, high-level panel discussions featuring representatives of the Plateau State Ministry of Environment, PSCA, and the media, participants will interrogate implementation pathways that prioritize gender equality, social inclusion, climate justice, and accountability.

The final day of the meeting will transition from dialogue to direct engagement, with advocacy visits to the Ministry of Environment and the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the State (SGS). These engagements will provide an opportunity to present community-driven demands and secure commitments for inclusive implementation. High-level stakeholders demonstrating leadership in climate justice will be conferred with the honorary recognition of “Climate Ambassador,” reinforcing partnership, responsibility, and accountability.

The African Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development reiterates its commitment to advancing evidence-based, people-centred policies that protect both the planet and the most vulnerable communities.
