See More ResourcesThe African Centre for Leadership, Strategy & Development on the project Core support for scaling-up the Side-by-Side Movement to mobilize religious and traditional leaders toward the implementation of GBV-related policies across Nigeria (The Side-by-Side Movement) will on the 5th of March 2025 host a one-day policy dialogue on the repeal of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act (VAPP Act). The event will bring together policymakers, civil society organizations, legal experts, and community advocates to engage in meaningful discussions on the future of the VAPP Act and its impact on the protection of vulnerable populations, especially women.
A statement by the project focal person at the Centre Mr. Essien Nyong indicated that the VAPP Act, a landmark legislation enacted to combat all forms of violence and ensure justice for the disadvantaged population, has been pivotal in addressing gender-based violence, domestic abuse, and harmful practices. The dialogue aims to explore the implications of repealing the Act, amplify the voices of affected communities, and advocate for policies that safeguard human rights and dignity.
The keynote speaker and panelists will include leading human rights advocates, members of the National Assembly and faith-based leaders, who will share their perspectives on the necessity of preserving and strengthening the VAPP Act. The dialogue will provide a platform for participants to contribute insights and propose strategic actions to uphold the fight against violence and injustice.
"The VAPP Act is a beacon of hope for countless individuals facing violence and discrimination. Repealing this vital legislation would be a significant step backward in our collective efforts to build a safer and more equitable society.
Centre LSD calls on all stakeholders, policymakers, and community members to actively participate in this crucial discussion and join the movement to ensure a violence-free society. Those unable to attend in person are encouraged to engage and follow updates via Centre LSD’s social media platforms.
