Today in Abuja, the conversation on equality reached the traditional institution as His Royal Majesty Agaba’Idu Dr. Elaigwu Odogbo John, the Och’Idoma and Paramount Ruler of Idoma Kingdom, called for harmful gender and cultural practices including child marriage, FGM, degrading widowhood rites and domestic violence to be discontinued.

He also challenged harmful beliefs around male superiority, unequal inheritance, exclusion of women from leadership and restrictive expectations of masculinity and fatherhood.

Also speaking, Rabi A. Anwar, Director, Legal Services and Enforcement Department of the National Human Rights Commission, called for a deliberate redefinition of fatherhood to advance gender equality and prevent GBV.
