Centre LSD Calls for Credible Elections and Human Rights-Centred Democracy as Nigeria Marks International Day of Democracy 2026 As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to commemorate the 2026 International Day of Democracy, the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development (Centre LSD) has called for a renewed commitment to building a democratic society founded on credible elections, accountable institutions, respect for human rights, the rule of law and meaningful citizen participation.

The commemoration provides an important opportunity for Nigeria to reflect on its democratic journey since the return to civilian rule on 29 May 1999. For 27 years, the country has sustained an uninterrupted civilian democratic dispensation. However, beyond the continuity of democratic rule, there is a need to critically examine how far Nigeria has progressed in deepening democratic values and ensuring that democracy delivers tangible benefits to its citizens.

The theme of the 2026 International Day of Democracy, “Bring Human Rights into Focus,” offers a timely reminder that democracy must be firmly rooted in the protection and promotion of human rights. It underscores the need for democratic institutions and processes to uphold the rights, freedoms, and dignity of citizens. In a statement marking the occasion, the Executive Director of Centre LSD, Mr Monday Osasah, said the theme is particularly relevant as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 General Elections.
