This publication explores the historical and ongoing marginalization of Nigeria's Middle Belt region through a critical lens of cultural identity, colonial legacies, and political domination. Blending historical narrative with contemporary analysis, the authors trace the origins of Middle Belt ethnic groups and question dominant narratives that overlook their unique heritage. Drawing parallels between the 19th-century Scramble for Africa and Nigeria's internal struggles over power, identity, and representation, the work positions the Middle Belt as a region historically under siege, politically, culturally, and linguistically.
The book incorporates deep reflections on the 1958 Minorities Commission sittings in Numan, where Middle Belt communities expressed fears of cultural suppression, political exclusion, and religious discrimination under Northern hegemony. Through testimonies, historical inquiry, and sociopolitical critique, the publication calls for renewed recognition of the Middle Belt's diversity and autonomy. It is both a historical archive and a contemporary advocacy piece urging equitable governance, self-determination, and justice for Nigeria’s marginalized groups.
