See More ResourcesThis book is a collection of papers presented at the policy dialogue on political succession in Nigeria, organized by the African Centre for the Leadership, Strategy & Development (Centre LSD) on 27 January 2011.
This publication compiles expert papers presented at a policy dialogue organized by Centre LSD amid Nigeria’s 2010 constitutional crisis triggered by President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s prolonged absence without formal power transfer. It explores the legal, strategic, and gendered dimensions of political succession in Nigeria, with contributions from Dr. Otive Igbuzor, Bamidele Aturu, Dr. Kabir Mato, and Saudatu Mahdi. The book argues that succession planning is critical to political stability and legitimacy and calls for reforms to address constitutional gaps and reinforce democratic institutions.
Key themes include the importance of rule-based succession, the impact of weak institutions, the role of civil society, and the exclusion of women from succession dynamics. The contributors advocate for constitutional reform, stronger political party democracy, citizen participation, and deliberate strategies to ensure inclusive and peaceful power transitions. This book is a timely intervention for scholars, policymakers, and civic actors navigating Nigeria’s complex political landscape.
