See More ResourcesWRAPA and Centre LSD hosted a crucial policy dialogue on Civic Space, Poverty, and Elections in Nigeria. The Policy Dialogue is to address the shrinking civic space to the deepening of poverty, and concerns around electoral integrity in Nigeria.
Day Two of the Policy Dialogue on Civic Space, Poverty, and Elections opened with a presentation by Tunde Salman, who took participants on a historical journey through Nigerias colonial era. He reminded us how early civic struggles despite repressive laws and restricted freedoms paved the way for collective political consciousness and ultimately, independence.Inspired by this backdrop, participants were divided into breakout groups to reflect on present-day realities and co-create actionable solutions.
The group sessions were vibrant and thoughtful, drawing on grassroots knowledge, policy experience, and civic advocacy. When the groups reconvened, each presentation reflected deep concern for Nigerias democratic future and a strong desire to restore civic spaces, protect fundamental freedoms, and empower citizens.Recommendations emphasized the urgent need to protect online civic spaces, invest in skills and civic education for vulnerable populations, and reform restrictive legal frameworks. Participants also called for greater unity and collaboration among civil society organizations, reduced internal competition, and a more proactive approach to advocacy. Strengthening ties with civic-minded government actors and improving engagement with security agencies were also seen as crucial steps in building a more inclusive democratic environment. As the dialogue continues, it is clear that real change is possible when voices are united and solutions are co-created.
